What one gold trade costs on FxPro
Work out the spread, commission and overnight swap for XAU/USD before you commit a rand.
The three costs you actually pay
A gold trade on FxPro has up to three costs: the spread, a commission on some accounts, and an overnight swap if you hold past 22:00 UK time. The spread is the difference between the buy and sell price and is built into every quote. A commission only applies on Raw+ and cTrader accounts, which instead offer tighter raw spreads.
On the Standard account there is no commission, so the spread is the whole trading cost while the position is open. Raw+ and cTrader accounts charge a per-lot commission but show the market spread almost without a mark-up. The swap is charged or credited each night depending on the interest rate difference between gold and the US dollar, and it can be positive or negative.
Why we do not publish a fixed cost
We deliberately do not state a single spread, commission or swap figure for FxPro because these numbers change with market liquidity and are not fixed. The spread on XAU/USD can widen during news events or thin trading, and the swap is recalculated daily from interbank rates. Any number we printed today could be wrong by tomorrow.
That does not leave you without a way to compare. FxPro publishes live spreads inside MT4, MT5 and cTrader, and you can see the current swap in the contract specifications before you open a trade. For a true cost comparison, use our gold position size and pip value calculators to turn the live spread into rand for your lot size — that is the number that matters.
How to work out your own cost per trade
Start with the position size calculator. One standard lot of XAU/USD is 100 ounces, and one pip is 0.01, so a one-pip move is $1 per lot. If you trade 0.10 lots, a one-pip move is $0.10. Multiply the live spread in pips by that pip value to get the spread cost in dollars, then convert to rand at the current rate.
The margin calculator shows how much of your account is locked up. At 1:500 leverage a 0.10-lot position needs about $85.50 margin, but retail clients in South Africa are limited to 1:200 unless they qualify as professional. Our profit calculator adds the swap and commission if you enter them, so you see the net result before you click buy.
What this means for your account
The account type changes which costs you face. Standard has no commission but a wider spread, which suits small positions or longer holds where the spread is paid once. Raw+ and cTrader have a commission per lot but a tighter spread, which usually works out cheaper for scalping or larger volume. The minimum deposit is about R1,600, and you can fund in rand via EFT or card.
If you hold a gold position overnight, check whether the swap is positive or negative before you open. FxPro offers an Islamic swap-free account on request, but that may carry an administration fee instead of a swap. FxPro is licensed by the FCA and CySEC, and an FxPro entity holds an FSCA licence in South Africa — check which entity your own account is opened with.
Where the real differences between platforms show up
The practical difference between MT4, MT5, cTrader and FxPro Edge is not the marketing list of features but how each handles your gold orders, charts and risk tools when volatility spikes. MT4 remains the blunt, familiar workhorse for XAU/USD with one-click trading and the deepest library of community indicators, which matters if you already use a specific gold scalping template. MT5 adds more order types and a better economic calendar, but its extra functions are not automatically useful for gold unless you trade futures-style depth. cTrader is the strongest for order-book visibility and fast DOM execution, while FxPro Edge is the broker’s own web platform, built for simple account management rather than heavy charting. Choose by the exact workflow you run on a 0.10-lot gold position, not by the platform’s reputation.
Execution speed differences are more about your connection and order type than the platform badge, but the feel of each terminal steers how you react around XAU/USD news. MT4’s market execution is adequate for most gold traders, yet its older architecture can feel laggy when you are switching from a 0.10-lot to a full 1-lot position during a breakout. cTrader’s depth-of-market panel lets you see resting liquidity before you click, which helps avoid chasing a price that has already moved. MT5 sits between the two, with better backtesting for gold strategies that rely on tick data. Before you commit, run the same gold setup on two platforms in demo for a week and note where you hesitate or mis-click.
What you cannot see on paper is how each platform handles partial fills and slippage on gold, because that depends on the liquidity provider at the moment you trade. A 1-lot XAU/USD order is 100 oz, roughly $427,500 of notional at a reference price of 4275.0, so even small execution differences convert into rand amounts that matter. MT4’s order window is simpler but offers fewer protections against a bad fill on a fast market. cTrader gives you more pre-trade control, including the ability to set a maximum deviation. MT5’s fill policy is configurable but requires you to understand the difference between return, cancel and fill-or-kill. The platform you can operate without thinking during a gold spike is the one that will save you money.
What switching platforms or brokers actually costs you
Switching from one platform to another within FxPro costs you nothing in fees, but it costs you time in rebuilding templates, indicators and watchlists for XAU/USD. Your MT4 gold chart with custom moving averages and a session box will not transfer automatically to cTrader or MT5, so you must recreate it by hand. If you have an automated strategy running on MT4, moving to a different platform means rewriting or recompiling the code, which can take days and introduce new bugs. The financial cost is zero, but the opportunity cost is real: every hour spent migrating is an hour not watching a gold setup.
Moving to a different broker entirely is where the real switching cost appears, because you must close open gold positions or transfer them, and neither is free. If you hold a 0.10-lot XAU/USD position with floating profit, closing it to move brokers triggers a realised gain or loss in rand terms and resets your holding period for tax purposes. You also lose any history, statements and trade analytics you have built, which matters if you use past gold trades to refine your risk. The new broker may offer a different leverage cap, so a position that needed about $85.50 margin at 1:200 could require more collateral elsewhere.
The hidden switching cost is the re-learning curve of a new execution environment, especially for gold where a one-pip move is 0.01 on XAU/USD. A platform that fills a market order slightly differently can change your average entry price on a 1-lot trade by enough to wipe out several pips of expected profit. You will also need to re-verify your funding method, because local cards and bank transfers in ZAR may take a few days to set up with a new broker, and e-wallet links must be re-authenticated. Before you switch, run the new setup in parallel on demo for at least two weeks and compare your gold fills against the old platform.
What to test on a demo before you fund a live account
Test the exact gold order flow you plan to use, down to the lot size and order type, because a 1-lot XAU/USD market order behaves differently from a 0.10-lot limit order. Place buy stops above a recent high and sell stops below a low on a demo account during active market hours, and record how often you get slipped. Check whether partial fills occur on gold when liquidity thins around major news, and whether the platform allows you to set a maximum deviation. This is the only way to see how the broker’s liquidity provider treats your orders before real rand is on the line.
Test your risk controls under stress, not just your entries. Open a 1-lot gold position and set a stop loss 50 pips away, then watch what happens if price gaps through that level in a fast market. On a demo account you can see whether the stop is filled at the requested price or with slippage, and whether your margin level stays healthy. At the maximum leverage available in South Africa, a 0.10-lot gold position needs about $85.50 margin, but a full lot needs ten times that, so a sudden adverse move can trigger a margin call quickly. Confirm you understand how the platform calculates margin and when it sends warnings.
Test the funding and withdrawal loop with a small amount before committing serious capital. Deposit R500 via a local card or bank transfer and withdraw it after one trade, timing how long each step takes in business days. South African bank transfers can be slower than e-wallets, and you need to know that delay before you rely on getting money out in an emergency. Also check whether the broker charges any currency conversion fee when you deposit rand into a dollar-denominated gold account. The FSCA-licensed entity caveat matters here: confirm which FxPro entity your account will be opened with, because that affects dispute resolution and deposit protection.
The support questions that reveal more than the website
Ask support exactly which entity will hold your account, because FxPro serves South Africa through FxPro Markets Direct Costa Rica Latam SRL, but an FxPro entity holds an FSCA licence locally. The answer determines which regulator you can approach if something goes wrong and what compensation scheme, if any, applies to your gold trading funds. Do not accept a vague answer like “FxPro is regulated”; insist on the legal name of the entity that will appear on your statements. This single question tells you more about your real protection than any marketing page.
Ask how gold swaps are calculated and when they are charged, without asking for a specific number. Swaps on XAU/USD are applied daily for positions held overnight, and the rate depends on the interest rate differential between the US dollar and gold lease rates, plus the broker’s markup. Request a live example: “If I hold a 1-lot long gold position through Wednesday night, what swap will be applied to my account in rand terms?” The support agent should be able to show you the current swap rate and explain the triple-swap convention on Wednesdays. If they cannot, that is a warning sign.
Ask what happens to your open gold positions and pending orders during major news or extreme volatility, and whether the broker can widen spreads or disable certain order types. Gold can gap sharply on US CPI or FOMC releases, and you need to know if your stop loss will be honoured or if the platform switches to “market closed” mode. Also ask about negative balance protection: confirm in writing that your account cannot go below zero on a leveraged gold trade, and which entity provides that protection. The answer will tell you whether the broker’s risk team treats South African retail clients the same as professional clients.
How platform choice changes your gold risk management
The platform you use directly affects how precisely you can set and move stops on XAU/USD, because each terminal has different order modification speed. MT4 allows you to drag a stop loss on the chart, but during a fast gold move the requote or slippage can mean your stop is filled far from where you placed it. cTrader’s depth-of-market panel shows you the available liquidity at each price level, so you can see whether your stop will hit a thick book or a thin one. MT5 offers trailing stops with more granular settings, which is useful for gold trends, but you must understand the minimum distance rules.
Risk management on gold is not just about the stop distance; it is about the margin you keep free after the position is open. A 1-lot XAU/USD position is 100 oz, so at a reference price of 4275.0 the notional value is about $427,500. With the maximum leverage available in South Africa, a 0.10-lot position needs about $85.50 margin, but a full lot needs roughly $855, and that is before any floating loss. If your platform does not show margin level clearly, you can be stopped out earlier than expected. Test on demo how the platform displays margin calls and whether it sends alerts before liquidation.
The choice between MT4, MT5, cTrader and FxPro Edge also changes how you journal and review your gold trades, which is a risk management tool in itself. MT4’s statement is basic and requires external tools for good analytics, while MT5 has a built-in report with profit factor and drawdown. cTrader’s backtesting is stronger for gold strategies that depend on tick data, and FxPro Edge is limited in this area. If you cannot accurately measure your gold trading results, you cannot manage risk over time. Pick the platform that gives you the clearest picture of your own performance, not the one with the most indicators.
How the platform choice shapes your gold trading in practice
The practical difference between MT4, MT5, cTrader and FxPro Edge is how order types, charting depth and partial-close handling fit your gold routine. MT4 remains the fastest for one-click market orders on XAU/USD, while MT5 adds depth-of-market and netting that suit traders managing multiple gold positions. cTrader exposes more granular volume steps and cBot automation, and FxPro Edge is the web fallback when you are away from your desktop. None of them changes the pip value of 0.01 on a 100 oz lot, but each changes how quickly you can flatten risk when gold moves sharply around 4275.0.
Execution speed and order modification are where the platforms separate themselves under volatility. Gold can gap through levels in seconds, so the ability to drag a stop loss without opening a ticket matters more than a chart colour. MT5 and cTrader allow partial fills and fill-or-kill logic that MT4 handles less cleanly. FxPro Edge is the slowest to customise but the easiest to load on a locked-down work laptop. Your choice should be driven by whether you scale into gold positions or trade single 0.10-lot entries where the $85.50 margin at 1:200 is the only number you need to watch.
Platform choice also changes how you see margin usage against the South African rand. MT4 shows margin in the account currency, but cTrader can display the same 0.10-lot gold position as roughly R1,600 depending on the USD/ZAR rate, which helps when you fund via EFT and think in rands. The leverage cap of 1:200 for retail in South Africa is applied identically across all four platforms, so the difference is visual and operational, not in the risk ratio itself. Test the order ticket on each before you commit, because the fastest platform is the one you already know without looking at the keyboard.
What it really costs to switch platforms or brokers after you start
Switching platforms within the same broker costs you nothing in fees but can cost you open positions if you move them carelessly. You can log into MT5 or cTrader with the same FxPro account and see your gold trades, but a position opened in MT4 stays tied to that terminal until you close it or ask support to migrate it. The migration itself is free, yet the time spent re-entering stop levels and re-checking the 0.01 pip value for XAU/USD is a real cost. If you are holding a 0.10-lot gold position with $85.50 margin at 1:200, a botched migration can leave you unhedged for minutes while gold moves.
Switching brokers is where the measurable cost appears, because you must close gold positions and withdraw via local cards or EFT, then re-deposit and re-open. The spread you pay on the closing trade and the opening trade at the new broker is the largest component, and it is never quoted as a fixed rand amount because it depends on gold volatility around the 4275.0 reference price. Withdrawal time from a South African bank transfer can take one to three business days, during which your capital is idle and you cannot act on a gold move. That opportunity cost often exceeds any difference in platform features.
The hidden cost of switching is relearning execution habits under live conditions. A trader moving from MT4 to cTrader will fumble the first few stop adjustments, and in gold that delay can be worth more than any spread saving. You also lose your trade history, which matters if you use past gold trades to calibrate position size or margin behaviour at the 1:200 retail cap. Before switching, ask the new broker whether your FSCA-regulated entity matches the one you are leaving, because protection and leverage eligibility can differ even when the brand looks identical. Switch only when the old platform blocks a strategy you already trade profitably on demo.
What to test on a demo before you fund a live gold account
The first thing to test is how the platform executes a 0.10-lot XAU/USD market order when price is near 4275.0 and volatility spikes. On demo, open and close that exact size ten times in a row, watching for slippage and requotes. Gold can move several pips between click and fill, and a platform that handles this cleanly on MT5 may stutter on FxPro Edge. You are not testing profit, you are testing whether the order ticket shows margin of roughly $85.50 at 1:200 before you click, so you never accidentally over-leverage a live account funded in rands.
Test the margin call and stop-out behaviour on a small demo position before you ever need it live. Set a 0.10-lot gold trade, then deliberately move the market against it by editing a pending order or using a simulated spike. Watch at what equity level the platform warns you and at what level it closes the trade. Because the South African retail leverage cap is 1:200, your buffer is thinner than a professional client with 1:500, so you must know whether the platform sends an email, a push notification, or nothing before liquidation. That knowledge is worth more than any chart indicator.
Finally, test the funding and withdrawal workflow in reverse without sending money. Go through the deposit screen for local cards and EFT in ZAR, note the exact beneficiary name and reference format, then check how long a withdrawal to the same method is quoted as taking. Many traders fund instantly but discover only later that a bank transfer withdrawal requires a proof of address or a specific FSCA entity check. Do this on the platform you will actually use, because cTrader sometimes routes deposits through a different page than MT5. If the demo cannot show you the live funding screens, ask support to walk you through them before you commit a single rand.
