Passing FxPro verification on the first submission
The identity check is the gate between your new account and your first withdrawal, so finish it before funding.
Documents that pass first time
FxPro asks for a proof of identity and a proof of address, and the strongest proof of identity for a South African is a clear colour scan or photo of your green barcoded ID book or smart ID card. A valid passport works too, but the ID book is preferred because it matches your local name exactly. For proof of address, use a utility bill, bank statement or SARS document issued within the last three months that shows your full name and residential address; a lease agreement is accepted but may be checked more slowly.
Make sure all four corners of the document are visible and the text is readable — blurry photos are the single biggest reason for rejection. If you are using a bank statement, it must be the full page, not a screenshot of the app. FxPro does not ask for a selfie during standard verification, but the client area may request a short video or extra document if the system flags a mismatch, so keep your ID nearby.
What sends the check back
A document older than three months fails instantly for proof of address, even if the address is still correct. The name on your proof of address must match the name on your ID and the name you used to register; if your account is under a nickname or initials, you will be asked to resubmit. Cropped or watermarked documents, especially screenshots with your banking app’s overlay, are rejected because they cannot be verified as originals.
Using a different address from the one on your proof of residence, even if it is your current home, triggers a manual review that can delay verification. If you have moved recently, update your bank statement address before submitting. FxPro does not accept a driver’s licence as proof of identity for South African clients, only as secondary support, so do not lead with it.
Why finish before the first deposit
An unverified account can fund and even trade, but it cannot withdraw a single rand — the withdrawal request is blocked until the documents are approved. By verifying first, you remove the most common cause of a frozen withdrawal later, and you avoid the temptation to trade while your proof of address is still pending. The process is free and usually completed in the client area under the verification tab.
Verification also locks your account to your real identity, which protects you if the account is ever compromised, and it confirms that your account entity is the FSCA-licensed one. If the verification request comes from an entity you do not recognise, pause and check the legal name against the FSCA register. Completing verification before your first deposit means your first withdrawal request will not be your first contact with the compliance team.
FICA and the law behind your verification
Your Rand Bullion account check exists because South Africa's Financial Intelligence Centre Act 38 of 2001 requires accountable institutions to identify every client before any transaction, including online trading accounts. Rand Bullion and its broker partner FxPro are legally obliged to verify your identity, residential address, and the source of your funds, so the FICA process you go through is not a policy choice but a direct legal duty under South African law.
The exact law that applies is FICA, which mandates a risk-based approach to customer due diligence. For a retail gold trading account, that means collecting a copy of your ID or passport, proof of address no older than three months, and sometimes a bank statement. Rand Bullion cannot open or fund an account without this, and the verification page you are on is the practical front end of that statutory requirement.
FSCA oversight adds a second layer: the Financial Sector Conduct Authority expects brokers serving South Africans to apply FICA properly, and an FxPro entity holds an FSCA licence. If verification is incomplete, the broker cannot lawfully provide trading services to you, and Rand Bullion would be in breach if it allowed deposits or trades. The check therefore protects you from fraud and the firm from regulatory penalties.
Document mistakes that send verification back
A rejected document is usually rejected for a fixable reason: the image is cropped, blurred, or has glare across the ID number, address, or expiry date. For a South African ID book or smart card, the photo page must show all four edges and every character legibly; a proof of address must be a full-page PDF or photo showing the bank or municipality logo, your name, the address, and a date within the last three months.
The most common specific errors are name mismatches and old utility bills. Rand Bullion compares the name and surname on your ID to the name on your proof of address and the name on your trading account; a missing second name, a different spelling, or an initial instead of a full name will trigger a rejection. A proof of address older than 90 days is automatically refused, and a cellphone bill is often not accepted unless it is a contract statement showing your physical address.
Selfies with the ID can also fail if the document is held at an angle, if your face is not clearly visible, or if the ID photo is not readable in the same frame. The fix is simple: retake in daylight with the document flat, ensure the full page is in frame, and use a PDF for bank statements. Rand Bullion does not charge for resubmission, and a rejection is not a black mark—it just delays your first deposit.
What happens to a deposit made before approval
A deposit made before verification is approved is held but not credited to your trading account. Rand Bullion and FxPro cannot legally allow you to trade gold XAU/USD until FICA is complete, so the funds sit in a segregated client account or are returned to the source. You will see the deposit as pending or blocked in your client portal, and no positions can be opened or margin used.
If you deposited via local bank transfer or card from South Africa, the money is not lost. The broker will either hold it for up to a short regulatory window while you complete verification, or refund it to the same card or bank account. A card refund can take several business days depending on your bank; an EFT refund is usually faster. Rand Bullion support can confirm which path applies to your case, but they cannot release funds to a trading account without approved documents.
The practical risk is time, not capital. Gold can move sharply while your deposit is frozen, and you will miss any price level you hoped to enter. That is why Rand Bullion tells you to finish verification before your first deposit. If you have already sent money, complete the document upload immediately and avoid sending a second deposit until the first is either credited or returned.
The suitability questionnaire and what your answers change
The suitability questionnaire asks about your trading experience, financial knowledge, income, and risk tolerance because FSCA and the broker must assess whether leveraged gold trading is appropriate for you. Your answers do not change the cost of trading or the margin formula, but they do change what leverage and products you are offered. If you report little experience or low risk tolerance, you may be restricted to lower leverage or asked to acknowledge extra risk warnings.
Specific answers can lower your maximum available leverage. A retail client in South Africa can access up to 1:200 on gold, but that is a cap, not a default. If you state that you have never traded CFDs before or that you cannot afford to lose the deposit, the broker may set your account to a lower leverage or require a cooling-off period. Professional or eligible clients can apply for up to 1:500, but that requires proving experience and financial thresholds, and it removes some retail protections.
The questionnaire also affects how margin is presented. At 1:200 leverage, a 0.10-lot gold position needs about $85.50 margin, but if your answers result in lower leverage, the required margin rises proportionally. If you state your income is irregular or your investment horizon is very short, the broker may flag your account for manual review and ask for additional documents, such as a payslip or a source-of-funds letter. Answer honestly; the questionnaire is not a test, but it determines your trading limits.
Why a face-to-face selfie is part of the check
The selfie step exists to prove that the person uploading the ID is the same person who owns the ID. Rand Bullion and FxPro are required by FICA to verify that identity documents are not stolen or borrowed, and a live selfie with the document in frame is the standard way to do that remotely. Without it, a fraudster could open an account in your name using a leaked ID photo.
The selfie is compared against the photo on your South African ID or passport using automated checks and sometimes a manual review. If the faces do not match, or if the document is not legible in the same photo, verification fails. You do not need to smile or look professional; you need a clear, well-lit, front-facing photo with both your face and the ID page fully visible, ideally held next to your face as Rand Bullion instructs.
This step does not affect your credit score or create any record with the government. It is stored only for compliance and anti-money-laundering purposes, and Rand Bullion cannot use it for marketing. If you are uncomfortable, you can ask for a video call verification with a compliance officer, but that may take longer. The selfie is not optional for South African retail accounts; it is a core part of the FICA process.
How long verification takes and what you can do to speed it up
Verification at Rand Bullion typically takes between a few hours and two business days, depending on document quality and volume. The broker states no fixed number, but a complete set of clear documents uploaded before noon on a business day is often approved the same day. Weekends and South African public holidays add delay, and manual review of a name mismatch or an old proof of address can extend it to several days.
The single biggest speed factor is document quality. A full-colour, high-resolution photo or PDF of your green ID book or smart card, a bank statement PDF from the last 30 days showing your residential address, and a sharp selfie with the ID will usually pass automated checks without human review. Blurry images, cropped edges, or a proof of address older than three months are the most common reasons for a second round, which resets the clock.
You can speed things up by checking the exact list on Rand Bullion's verification page before you start, using the same name format as your ID, and uploading all documents in one session. Do not email documents separately unless support asks you to, because that creates duplicate files and confusion. If your verification has been pending for more than two business days, contact support through the client portal with your application number, not a new email thread.
The legal basis for Rand Bullion’s verification step
The verification step exists because Rand Bullion is legally required to identify you under South Africa’s Financial Intelligence Centre Act (FICA). This law applies to all accountable institutions, including brokers like FxPro through which Rand Bullion’s gold trading is executed, and it mandates that your identity and residential address be confirmed before any trading relationship is activated. Without this check, no FSCA-regulated entity may lawfully accept your deposit or open your account. The requirement is not optional and cannot be waived, regardless of how small your intended first deposit is.
FICA compels the broker to collect, verify, and keep records of your full name, date of birth, ID or passport number, and residential address. For South African residents, a green barcoded ID book or smartcard is the standard proof of identity, while a recent utility bill, bank statement, or lease agreement not older than three months serves as proof of address. The law also requires ongoing monitoring, which means your account may be re-verified periodically or if you change your address, name, or funding method. This is a continuous obligation, not a once-off event.
The practical trigger for verification is your first deposit or withdrawal request, but Rand Bullion and FxPro may ask for documents at account opening to avoid delays later. FICA does not specify a maximum time for verification, but institutions must complete it before establishing a business relationship or carrying out a transaction. If you submit unclear or mismatched documents, the process restarts, and your deposit remains unallocated until compliance is satisfied. Treat verification as the gateway to trading gold, not an administrative hurdle you can bypass.
Document mistakes that halt Gold account approval
The most common rejection is a document that is not in colour, not fully legible, or has corners cut off in the photo. Rand Bullion’s compliance team must read every line on your ID and proof of address, so a blurry scan or a cropped image of your smartcard will be sent back. Use a flatbed scanner at 300 dpi or a smartphone camera in good light, and ensure the entire document is visible with no glare over the text. A document that is older than three months for proof of address is also automatically rejected.
Name mismatches are the second biggest cause of refusal. If your ID says “Johannes Petrus van der Merwe” but your proof of address or bank statement shows “J.P. van der Merwe” or “Johan van der Merwe”, the system flags it as a mismatch. Even a single letter difference, like “Meyer” versus “Meijer”, stops approval. Your proof of address must be in the same legal name as your ID and in your own name or clearly linked to you as a dependent or spouse. Utility bills in a landlord’s name are not accepted unless accompanied by a signed lease agreement.
Selfies and liveness checks fail when the photo is taken from too far away, in poor light, or with a hat, sunglasses, or heavy shadow on the face. The face must match the ID photo you submitted, and the selfie must be taken live during the process, not uploaded from your gallery. A common error is submitting a screenshot of a video call or a scanned passport photo. Use a plain background, hold the camera at eye level, and follow the on-screen instructions exactly. If the system cannot match your face to your ID, verification is paused until you retake the selfie.
What happens to an early deposit before approval
A deposit made before your verification is approved is held in a segregated client account and is not lost, but it is also not available for trading gold. Rand Bullion and FxPro cannot allocate the funds to your trading account until the FICA check is complete, and the deposit will show as “pending” in your portal. You will not earn interest on this money while it waits, and you cannot withdraw it until your identity is verified. The funds are safe, but they are frozen from your perspective, and no trading can occur.
If your verification is rejected after the deposit, the money remains in the segregated account until you correct the document errors. The broker will email you a specific reason for the rejection and a deadline to resubmit, usually within 30 days. If you do not respond or cannot fix the issue, the deposit is refunded to the original funding source, which can take five to ten business days depending on your bank. You cannot use a card or EFT in someone else’s name to fund your account, as that triggers an immediate compliance block.
To avoid the freeze, complete verification before you send any rand amount. Rand Bullion’s onboarding flow will not show you deposit methods until after you have uploaded documents, but some users find the payment link through a direct email or third-party site and pay early. That is a mistake: the deposit will sit in limbo, and you may miss a trading opportunity while the compliance team reviews your file. Verification typically takes one to three business days, so finish the document step first and then fund your account with a local card or bank transfer in ZAR.
